After multiple Spider-Man games, this one stands on the pinnacle of them all. From the start, the traversal and swinging mechanics are perfected. The reason I mention that to begin with is that it is the core mechanics of every Spider-Man game. And it was a blast moving around the open world as Spider-Man. From web zipping to wall running and point launches, Manhattan felt like a massive playground. The combat and stealth evidently took heavy inspiration from the Batman Arkham series, but with the flashy acrobatic style of Spider-Man. With the high adrenaline Spider-Man sequences, the Mary Jane stealth sequences felt underwhelming and boring. I personally have no issues with stealth if I’m playing Spider-Man, but as Mary Jane, it felt drawn out. But in terms of story, the character development is gradual but worthwhile and explores the multiple dilemmas heroes face when having a double life. Even with that, the multiple storylines branching out (and leading to nowhere at times) made the main plot feel out of focus- making it feel terribly paced at times. Overall, this is an amazing Spider-Man game and a step in the right direction for the future of the franchise.
