Netflix’s One Piece remake was a fun watch. Being a longtime fan of the series, I’m attached to the original characters, hence why you’ll be seeing me compare between them alot. To begin, the plot follows the same skeleton as the original’s East Blue saga- with minor changes that included Netflix’s unique spin. The arcs remained somewhat faithful, but I do have alot of likes and some dislikes. From the start, everything was “smooth sailing” until the Syrup Village arc. Personally I felt the show started to lose pace here because the stakes didn’t feel as high, making the series slump before catching pace. Also, it’s around these episodes where Zoro’s backstory was introduced. It lacks the drive it had in the original (and so did Usopp’s backstory). I personally didn’t enjoy Zoro’s extremely serious character here. His combat sequences were fun to watch but his lines and delivery were monotone. In the original he was very expressive (but Luffy, Nami, Usopp and Sanji’s characters more than make up for it). For the remaining three of the crew, their backstories were full of emotion. The other arcs I didn’t mention were very good, with exception to Arlong Park and Baratie- which were brilliant. But what really struck me was the ending of the season. The scene right before the credits role in the season finale is just perfect. Overall, Netflix’s One Piece is a very good show, it is a fun watch and the plot intertwines nicely as the story progressed, breaking the curse of bad live action adaptations.
